Piston Engine |
| An aircraft piston engine are just like the one found in your car. Highly reliable and maintained to very high and exacting standards. |
Turbine/Turbo Shaft Engine |
| Essentially a jet engine connected to a propeller via a drive shaft. In a helicopter it's connected to the rotor blades (turbo shaft). Extremely reliable and powerful these are the same type as you find on all propellor airliners. |
Jet Engine |
| A jet engine that has no external propellor or rotor blade. Cold air in the front and very hot powerful air out the back! Jet engines make airplanes go fast! |
Daytime |
| The period between civil sunrise and civil sunset. These times change every day and depend on your latitude and the day of the year. For example, the difference in civil sunrise on the same day between Sydney & Melbourne can be 24 minutes! Melbourne to Darwin? It can be 1 hour difference! |
Night Time |
| The period between civil sunset and civil sunrise. Night flights using piston engine require the use of multi engine aircraft. |
Pressurised |
| If the cabin is pressurised it means the aircraft can fly higher than 10,000 feet without the need for supplemental oxygen for crew and passengers. Flying at higher altitudes improves range, speed and can also help avoid weather like cloud, rain and storms. |
